Micro Financing Malaysia – TEKUN vs BSN vs AIM vs FundingBee: Which One Should You Apply For?

22 July 2026

If you need RM5,000 to RM50,000 quickly, FundingBee is often the fastest choice.

This applies if your business does not qualify for Bumiputera, women-only, or Shariah-restricted schemes.

If you qualify for TEKUN, BSN Micro-i, or AIM and can wait a few weeks for approval, apply there first. Their rates are lower. The right choice depends on your race, gender, business sector, and how urgently you need the funds. The comparison below breaks down exactly which one fits your situation.

Micro Financing Is the Backbone of Malaysia's Grassroots Economy

Micro businesses alone make up 70.1% of all MSMEs in Malaysia.[1] That means most Malaysian entrepreneurs run the kind of small, owner-run business this guide is for. These include a single retail shop, a workshop, or a home-based F&B operation.

Despite that scale, many micro entrepreneurs still hit a wall with traditional banks. Banks often require two years of audited financials and a clean credit record before they'll even consider an application.

Micro financing exists to fill that gap. Below, we compare the four main routes in Malaysia today. They are TEKUN Nasional, BSN Micro-i, Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM), and FundingBee. See which one actually fits your situation.

What Is Micro Financing? (And Why It Is Not Just a Small Loan)

Key Features That Make Micro Financing Unique in Malaysia

Microfinance began in Bangladesh. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus started the model with Grameen Bank in the 1970s. He lent small amounts to help low-income entrepreneurs build their livelihoods.

Malaysia's version of this idea has since evolved into a mix of race-based schemes (such as TEKUN's Bumiputera-focused programmes), Shariah-compliant options, and open-eligibility lenders, but none of it is simply a bank loan with a smaller price tag. Most of the schemes below were built specifically for borrowers who fall outside conventional banking criteria.

That means the application process tends to be more hands-on. Non-bank lenders rely on alternative assessment methods such as cash flow review.

Who Is Micro Financing Designed For?

These schemes are built for a specific borrower profile: hawkers, home-based bakers, workshop owners, sundry shop operators, and other small business owners who need working capital, stock, or equipment.

If you don't prefer the paperwork involved in a bank's underwriting process, one of the four options below should work for you.

The 4 Major Micro Financing Providers in Malaysia – Compared

TEKUN Nasional – Best for Bumiputera Entrepreneurs

TEKUN Nasional is a government agency under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP). Its flagship TEKUN Niaga scheme offers financing of up to RM100,000 at a flat profit rate of 4% per annum, with repayment periods extending up to 10 years.[2]

Because TEKUN uses a flat-rate, not a reducing balance method, the true cost is higher than 4%. Depending on tenure and repayment terms, the effective annual cost is usually above 4%. It may be similar to mid-single-digit bank loan rates on a reducing balance basis.

TEKUN generally does not require audited financial statements for microfinancing schemes. Approval is based on document checks, bank transaction history, and field business viability checks. It does not rely on credit scoring alone. However, applicants must still meet basic eligibility rules and show they can repay. Requirements may vary by scheme and loan size.[2]

TEKUN serves entrepreneurs from various communities through different scheme variants. However, its core Teman TEKUN and SPUMI programmes have often prioritised Bumiputera and specific ethnic communities. Eligibility depends mainly on which scheme you apply under.[3] A 5% mandatory savings contribution also applies on top of the profit rate.[4]

Example: A car workshop owner who has been operating for under a year may apply to TEKUN Niaga. They may not have audited accounts. They may have a clear plan to buy a new diagnostic machine.

BSN Micro-i TemanMesra (MADANI) – Islamic Micro Financing Open to All Races

BSN has updated its popular micro-financing scheme into BSN Micro-i TemanMesra (MADANI). Under the current MADANI economic framework, this updated product has government guarantees from SJPP. This makes it very accessible for MSMEs in 2026.[5]

BSN Micro-i TemanMesra needs your business registration with SSM or a local authority. The bank must fully verify all documents. The application includes internal credit and business checks. The full approval and disbursement process usually takes longer than with non-bank or fintech lenders. Approval timelines can vary depending on case complexity and branch processing time.

Example: A small retail shop owner who can wait a few weeks or more for funds may choose BSN Micro-i TemanMesra.

Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) – For Women & B40 Communities

AIM is Malaysia's largest microfinance institution and primarily targets B40 households with a strong focus on women entrepreneurs rather than exclusively serving them. [6] Its scheme, i-Paduri Madani (launched in May 2026), offers business financing of RM3,000 to RM30,000. The annual rate is 10%. Borrowers have up to 3 years to repay. It usually does not require collateral or a guarantor. Approval depends on AIM’s assessment process.[7]

To qualify, household income must not exceed RM5,880 per month, or RM1,470 per household member.[7]

The defining feature of AIM's model is group-based lending. Applicants form groups of five unrelated women who share repayment responsibility. Weekly Centre Meetings are also part of the process.

AIM uses a group-based microfinance model rather than conventional credit scoring, making it accessible to borrowers who may not qualify for bank loans. However, lenders still assess applicants for eligibility and repayment capacity, and they generally restrict individuals whom the law declares bankrupt from obtaining new credit.

Example: A B40 woman running a home-based F&B business with no credit history is exactly who this scheme was designed for.

FundingBee – Fastest Approval, 100% Online, No Collateral Needed

FundingBee, operated by Bee Informatica Sdn Bhd, is a licensed non-bank lender under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT License No. WL7517).[8]

It offers financing from RM5,000 to RM50,000, with a fully online application. No audited financial statements and no collateral are required, though the business must typically have been operating for at least one year.[8]

Because FundingBee uses its own cash-flow-based review, it does not follow the traditional bank process.  Approval usually takes a few days. Not weeks.[8]

A one-time processing fee of 8% applies to approved financing and is disclosed upfront in the loan agreement.[8]

FundingBee has funded over 400 businesses in many sectors. These include food and beverage, retail, car workshops, and other service businesses. It does not restrict eligibility by race, gender, or religion.[8]

Example: An auto workshop owner needs RM20,000 this week to restock parts before a busy period. They also lack two years of audited accounts for a bank. This fits the FundingBee profile well. So does a retail kiosk operator who tops up stock before a festive season. Or an F&B stall owner who pays a deposit for new equipment.

Head-to-Head Comparison: TEKUN vs BSN vs AIM vs FundingBee

Approval Speed & Documentation Required

TEKUN involves a branch-based application process with officer evaluation, including business feasibility assessment and possible site visits.[4] AIM uses a group-lending model that requires applicants to form solidarity groups. Applicants must also complete field-based assessment and training. Both systems require in-person checks and usually take longer than digital or bank lending to release funds.

While the Malaysian government has mandated that federal agencies like TEKUN and AIM speed up approvals to 5 to 7 working days in 2026[9], the actual time from your first inquiry to the money hitting your bank account usually takes 2 weeks or more. In practice, bank financing applications such as BSN Micro-i TemanMesra may take around two weeks or longer.  The timeline depends on verification and approval procedures.

FundingBee's online application is built for speed. The documentation covers only a handful of basic business documents, and we don’t need any audited statements. Because the entire process happens digitally, we typically measure approval in days rather than weeks.[10]

For a business owner who needs to restock shelves before a weekend rush or cover an unexpected repair bill, that timeline difference often matters more than a few percentage points in rate.

Top Micro Financing Questions from Malaysian Business Owners

Can I Apply If I Have Limited or Poor Credit?

It depends on the provider. TEKUN assesses applications based on multiple factors, including the applicant's business activity and repayment capacity, rather than relying solely on conventional credit assessment. This makes the scheme easier to use for many micro-entrepreneurs. They may not meet the stricter lending rules of commercial banks.

AIM mainly uses group-based lending and community checks. It does not rely as much on standard credit scores as commercial lenders.

BSN Micro-i TemanMesra and commercial banks generally do check your credit history as part of standard underwriting.

FundingBee uses its own cash-flow-based assessment. What matters most is whether your business cash flow can support the repayment.[10]

Is There a Micro Loan Available for Non-Bumiputera Malaysians?

Yes. While some TEKUN schemes have historically prioritised Bumiputera and specific ethnic-community allocations,[3] BSN Micro-i Madani is available to eligible Malaysian-owned micro enterprises that meet the programme's requirements.[5]

AIM is open to eligible Malaysian women from low-income households, regardless of ethnicity. They must meet the programme's household income and other eligibility requirements.[6]

FundingBee does not restrict eligibility by race, gender, or religion at all.

How Long Does Micro Financing Approval Take?

While the Malaysian government has mandated that federal agencies like TEKUN and AIM expedite approvals to 5 to 7 working days in 2026, the actual time from your first inquiry to the money hitting your bank account usually takes 2 or more weeks.

Online non-bank lenders like FundingBee focus on speed. Approval is usually completed within days of submitting documents.

Conclusion – The Right Micro Financing Depends on Your Unique Situation

There's no single “best” micro financing option in Malaysia. There's only the one that matches your eligibility, timeline, and rate flexibility.

If you qualify for TEKUN, BSN Micro-i, or AIM and can plan a few weeks ahead, their rates are generally the most affordable option to start with.

If your business doesn't fit those eligibility boxes, or you need funds in days, FundingBee can help. FundingBee offers RM5,000 to RM50,000 and a fully online process to fill that gap. No collateral, no audited accounts, no long wait.
