Exploring Better Financial Support for Malaysia’s Micro and Small Businesses

Bee Informatica recently hosted an Agent Coffee Chat, bringing together two new agent partners to share feedback on FundingBee’s services and discuss the challenges micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs and MSMEs) in Malaysia face.
The conversation went beyond financing, exploring ways to support entrepreneurs through financial education, business networks and future collaborations.
Reaching Businesses That Need Financial Support
Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) account for more than 96% of business establishments in Malaysia and play a vital role in the country’s economic growth. Yet, many of these businesses still face major challenges accessing financing.
As discussed during the session, not every business can access traditional bank loans. Factors such as business size, industry risks and lending criteria can make it difficult for some SMEs to secure financing, even when they need funds to sustain or grow their operations.
This highlights the need for more accessible financial solutions, along with support that accounts for business owners' different circumstances.
Supporting SMEs Beyond Financing
The discussion also focused on helping business owners manage their finances and prepare for future financing needs.
Financial education is an important part of this process. Keeping personal and business finances separate, maintaining proper financial records and preparing bank statements are essential steps when applying for business financing. However, some entrepreneurs may not fully understand these requirements.
One participating agent, Mr. Nizam, draws on 30 years of banking experience to help small business owners understand their financial challenges and navigate the financing process.
Another agent partner, Rock Corporate Advisory, supports businesses through cash flow coaching and connections with accounting, tax, and legal professionals.
By helping business owners understand their financial position and prepare the necessary documents, these forms of support can improve their readiness to apply for financing and strengthen their day-to-day business management.
Building Networks to Support Women Entrepreneurs
During the Coffee Chat, Bee Informatica CEO Fumiko also raised the challenges women entrepreneurs in Malaysia face.
Access to capital matters, but having people to turn to for advice, share experiences with, and learn from can also make a significant difference. Yet, some women entrepreneurs lack strong business networks and may have to navigate their challenges alone.
Building a supportive community is not always straightforward. Some business owners may hesitate to join formal networks or feel uncomfortable sharing their business challenges with others.
The group discussed ways to create more natural opportunities for entrepreneurs to connect, including collaborations with existing business networks and event organisers. Ideas included setting up booths at business events and organising networking sessions where entrepreneurs can exchange knowledge and build meaningful connections.
Turning Conversations into Collaboration
The Agent Coffee Chat provided an opportunity to gather feedback on FundingBee’s services while exploring how financing, business support, education and networking can work together.
Supporting Malaysia’s SMEs and MSMEs requires more than providing access to capital. Business owners also need the knowledge, guidance and connections to make informed decisions and build sustainable businesses.
